MONSTER HOUSE YARD SALE 6/5/2010

Entrepreneurship is the rumored heart and soul of the capitalist enterprise and therefore the ostensible lifeblood of our nation.

The "yard sale," as it is popularly known, is a reenactment and metaphor, based in nostalgia, for an utopian (as in no place) American entrepreneurship/citizenship.

We can think of the yard sale as saying, "Yes, I am American - I have a yard, my own piece of America. And I have objects, objects which I am free to include in the free-market."

It is in the hollow and temporary union of these two drives - economic and political, free-market and "free personhood," that we can understand what Americans think it means to be "American" - even as the true foundation of the American economy in the 21st century belies the notion that the individual has any agency in its machinations.

Delay - Jimi Baby Tape

In 2007 I was/had a bike wreck. I broke my jaw in three places, broke a vertebrae in my neck, broke the littlest toe on my right foot and suffered extensive facial lacerations. Worst of all, my prized Peugeot, the first road bike I ever bought, was bent out of shape. I was in the hospital for a night and then stayed at my mother's house, unable to chew for a month. I moved back into The Monster House and walked around campus in a neck brace with facial stitches and scared my teachers and fellow students. That quarter I was given very generous grades.

Delay and special guest star Kari Jorgensen recorded a tape e.p. thematically organized about me for my 22nd birthday, spurred on by my bike wreck and the tenuous grip we all hold on "life". Not that the tape is especially honorific, the songs actually don't paint the prettiest picture of me. I was living a different life then, one where Sparks, dumpstered pizza, not going to sleep and being quasi-lecherous were in the mix. Comically, it's called the Jimi Baby Tape. "Jimi Baby" was the shrill nickname Aarthi coined and everyone made fun of. Now, thanks to this tape, people I don't really know across the nation call me Jimi Baby. Great.

Shout Out Loud Prints Compilation Tape

Pat Crann of Shout Out Loud Prints recently put out a tape comp in conjunction with In The Pocket Tapes (both companies are run out of The Monster House art-fraternity compound). The tape is a collection of bands, old and new, that have ordered shirts to be silk-screened from Shout Out Loud Prints. The selection is a veritable who's who of national DIY pop-punk bands in the 2000s including Defiance, Ohio, Screaming Females and Modern Machines, mixed in with local yokels like Vile Gash, Slugging Percentage, Tin Armor, Saint Seneca and my old band Amelia. Previously unreleased tracks from Paul Baribeau, Best Friends Forever, Good Luck, The Boy Who Could Fly and a Minor Threat cover by Letters To The Moon make this a rare comp worth copping. SLUGGING PERCENTAGE TAPE OUT NOW

Slugging Percentage is the baseball themed, Doubleday managed, Upper Deck marketed, sludgecore band of my roommates Ryan Starinsky and Andy Gardner. They sing the national anthem before the first song/inning and set up bases around the drum set for circle pitting/inside the parks.  Each show is played in proper attire for the outfield and each and every one of their songs is about "America's national religion." Usually the songs focus on a single player from the 90s golden era, like the song "Fred McGriff" in which I say "Crime Dog" in the gang vocals section. I would go and download it all. Sara Drake, the prolific illustrator, created the cover design. Catch Slugging Percentage on their first national tour this summer which will be divided into NL and AL teams. Also, it is "Joey Belle" not "Albert."
