Jessica Langley's Killin' It

Jessica Langley's Killin' It opens tomorrow night (5/11) at Skylab Gallery. Pittsburgh-based artist Langley is Skylab's first artist-in-residence in an ongoing residency program at the gallery, which was funded by a Franklin County Neighborhood Arts grant administered by the Greater Columbus Arts Council. Langley will be in residence for the remainder of May, working on a new body of prints. The opening reception for Killin' It starts at 7 p.m.; refreshments will be provided. In addition, the exhibit may be seen by appointment until June 8th. To make an appointment, email skylabartspace@gmail.com.

One Hour Publication

Open publication - Free publishing - More heatspace

One Hour Publications is a zine series exploring collaborative situations, artist publications, and self-publishing. Each book's content is made within one hour by Jack Ramunni and one collaborator in Heat Space at the Columbus College of Art and Design. 

For the first One Hour Publication, I extemporaneously wrote a suite of twelve poems about the city of Columbus, memory, and decay. Jack then drew a companion illustration for each poem as it came off the typewriter.

The next One Hour Publication features Alex Ross and it is funny.

Austin approaches the performance area. In the performance area is a cup of water resting on a stool. Austin tells a "joke" then goes to drink water out of the cup. But the cup has been attached to the stool, so Austin has to pick up the whole thing to take his drink. The end.

Punknews.org Reviews the Lose The Tude 7-Inch

A Columbus-based writer under the name 'OverDefined' contributed a review of the Lose The Tude 7-inch to Punknews.org.

IMHO, regarding Lose The Tude as 'jokey hardcore' is a critical misapprehension. Lose The Tude is less a joke band and more of a 'serious-joke' band. That is to say, Lose The Tude is self-aware; recognizing the problematic dictatorial style and unalloyed masculinity present in hardcore, Lose The Tude adopts the same rhetorical strategy but inverts it on its head to say, 'the emperor has no clothes' - serious techniques are used for unserious purposes, the voice of confidence is used to voice doubt and what is often an unsafe, exclusive show environment is hopefully turned into an inclusive one. But even with the play of meaning that Lose The Tude is engaged in to question how hardcore is 'performed,' Lose The Tude's lyrics and political aims are strictly earnest and honestly expressed. So Lose The Tude should instead be viewed as self-reflexive and working on more layers than easily come across - remember, the band was initially started as a response to the conservative hardcore culture popular in Columbus in 2006/2007: CCHC, et al. There is a large component of performative criticism in the songs and on-stage style of Lose The Tude, and while humor is certainly a tactic used to convey that criticism, I would hesitate to call it a 'joke.'

Delusion of Eating Exhibition and Essay

I wrote an essay for the Delusion of Eating exhibition catalogue entitled "People Eat so They Don't Die." You can read that essay after "the jump."

The opening of the exhibition happens October 7th from 6 - 9 p.m. at The Shelf on 57 E. Gay Street, Columbus, Ohio. The catalogue is limited to 75 copies and can be pre-ordered here. It includes writing by Eva Ball and Ian Ruffino (the curators), as well as Wes Flexner, Matt Morris, and myself. In addition to the writing, the catalogue has full color reproductions of the work in the show, including pieces by Grant LaValley, John Malta, Dan Olsen, Dina Sherman, and other Columbus-related artists.

The overview of the show goes as such:

"The Delusion of Eating exhibit presents a national array of artworks that eloquently use the marketed spectacle of eating as the material to explore how capitalism creates an isolating desire.Works include video, painting, photography, sculpture, performance, and text; all creating a discourse about our lives in the contemporary situation where ideologies about eating are shifting away from science-lab food products and into marketed desires for ‘natural’ ‘slow’ food stuffs, while for the majority of Americans these ‘local’ foods are out of the question due to geography and class."

The First Three Years Of The Monster House

For the past three years I have lived in the Monster House, a DIY punk house in Columbus, Ohio. I co-founded the Monster House with Pat Crann, Austin Eilbeck, Ryan Eilbeck, Jeff Love, Kristina Markey, Matt O'Conke, Joe Scarbro, Dylan Taylor-Lehman, and Nick Wong. A few weeks ago the last three original roommates - besides me - left. And, as of this week, I'm moving out as well. A group of our friends still living at the Monster plan to continue hosting shows and events. On October 8th, Apache Dropout, Landlord, Reverse The Curse, and Cody Troyan are performing there.

After "the jump" is a list of every performer who occasioned the "stage" at the Monster House in the last three years. 400 different performers have played over 150 shows booked by over 20 promoters. The list is representative of the Columbus punk scene as well as the national DIY touring circuit from 2007-10.

More than 30 people paid rent at the house during this time span.

Poem In September's Short North Gazette

The Short North Gazette recently published an excerpt of my poem, Recollections Of How I Smelled On I-90, which is really quite a long poem as I tend to smell like many things. It has some local interest as its content.

I'm fond of the Short North Gazette for reasons outside of their publishing my poem. I like the James Thurber coverage, I like the odd gag cartoons, the poetry, the magazine-length articles on Columbus history, and, most of all, I like the semi-recent addition of Jared Gardner to their stable of columnists. Gardner is an Associate Professor of English at Ohio State and heads the pop-culture minor there. (He also writes for The Comics Journal.) He was not only my Personalized Study Program advisor but also the advisor for the independent study project that "Punk Zine" came out of. So I'm doubly happy to see my poem published across from his moving eulogy of Harvey Pekar, who I first saw IRL at The Mershon Auditorium during a discussion that Gardner moderated.

The Gazette is free and available seemingly anywhere in The Short North.

We Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut

This book, We Never Learn, is out and about for your purchasing whim. It was written by Eric Davidson, the lead singer/provocateur of Columbus's own New Bomb Turks, and it features a foreword by Byron Coley who writes a column with Thurston Moore at Arthur and Wire.

(Coley is also a poet who wrote a biography of Chuck Norris.)

I transcribed a couple of interviews on behalf of Eric for this book - one with Rocket From The Crypt's John Reis and another that I can't recall. I learned more about San Diego from listening to John Reis than from any other experience in my life, including being in San Diego. Outside of San Diego-centric concerns, I think that if you like punk, garage, punky-garage or garagey-punk and somehow also enjoy reading that you will be pacified and pleased by We Never Learn.
